Surface Preparation

Surface Preparation

Although often neglected, the surface preparation is the most important stage of the process. Well-prepared surface is the basis of well-done job without any inconveniences. In general, for all the finishes, it is necessary to insure that the surface is homogenous in absorption qualities, clean, dry, sound, hard and cohesive.
Small addition of coating material and a layer of primer is not always enough. You have to carry out the surface preparation depending on their condition.
To find out how to prepare your surface depending upon the coating and its destination (interior or exterior), you can use the unified building code documents.

The table below summarises the preparation procedures for each type of surface according to the general practices.

SURFACE

PREPARATION

New or untreated:

Plaster and plaster-based surface

PPlasterboards

Fibre cement

a. Brushing, polishing and dusting / b. Primer

On irregular surface :

 c. Filling the holes and/or raking / d. Primer

Gypsum tiles

Brick tiles

Aerated concrete

a. Brushing, polishing and dusting / b. Primer

 c. Covering (screed, lime-based or hybrid mortar) or skim coat /

d. Primer

Hydraulic binders

 a. Brushing, scraping/ b. Primer

On irregular surface:

 e. Covering (screed, lime-based or hybrid mortar) or skim coat /

 d. Primer

Wood and wood products (indoors)

a. Brushing / b. Primer / c. Sanding

On irregular surface :

 c. Filling the holes and/or raking d. Sanding / e. Primer

Old stripped surfaces

a. Polishing, cleaning, rinsing / b. Primer

On irregular surface :

 c. Filling the holes and/or raking / d. Sanding / e. Primer

Old paints

(excluding exterior pliolite and flexible coating to strip)

a. Cleaning, rinsing, matting of satin, shiny or blocked paint /

b. Primer

On irregular surface :

 e. Covering (screed, lime-based or hybrid mortar) or skim coat /

 d. Primer

For our lime-based finishers on all the surfaces indicated above (except old exterior paint to strip) as well as on old surfaces, mineral and lime-based coatings or on hybrids (hydrated lime / cement; hydraulic lime), it is necessary to apply our Lime Primers. It is possible to apply our lime-based finishers on new porous surfaces, mineral coatings based on slightly hydrated lime, or even on hybrids (hydrated lime / cement; hydraulic lime) eventually moisturising the surface.

SPECIAL CASES:

- For the coatings allowing exposure to water (for example, shower walls), such as Marmorino MARBREX L,Tadelakt MARMOLAKT, layered polished concrete SOL-LIS, Stucco Mantovano FINITION S, it is necessary to have a mineral hydraulic support (screed, hydraulic coating or hybrid screed), so we recommend placing our screed mortar MULTITOP.

- For our layered polished concrete (SOL-LIS), it is obligatory to have a dry clean and sound (without cracks) hydraulic prepare the surface with our mortar screed MULTITOP.

- For rendering on existing tiles, mostly for our layered polished concrete coatings SOL-LIS and Marmorino MARBREX L, Tadelakt MARMOLAKT and Stucco Mantovano FINITION S you can use our screed mortar MULTITOP to prepare the surface. However, you need to remember that tiles are not the surface to place the coating on, thus it is beyond normal practices and no specific guarantee can be given. Nevertheless, this system shows good results and it is advised to add RESIN FOR SOL-LIS as you mix the screed mortarMULTITOP (see technical specifications).

- The screed mortar MULTITOP can be armed with our fiberglass TRAMEX in case the surface is cracked or subjected for slight movement or in case a Thermal Insulation System for Exteriors must be applied on insulation panels.

Information contained in this specification is the expression of our knowledge and test results. In no case may it be considered as a guarantee nor engage our responsibility in case of improper application.
